The Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department recently competed in a strenuous Advanced Life Support (ALS) competition at the University of Miami, along with 14 other agencies from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, St. Lucie, and Flagler counties.

The three members of the Davie ALS Team, Driver Engineer Vincent Martinez, Firefighter Jason Owen, and Firefighter Dan Moran won second place in a simulated scenario taken from real events. This year’s scenario called the competitors to SOUTHCOM, the military command center in west Miami-Dade, following a terrorist detonated explosion in the processing station. Each three member paramedic team was judged on prioritizing and treating multiple patients who all required acute life-saving interventions under very difficult conditions. In addition, all the lights went out after a second blast. To add to the realism, personnel from the Army Trauma Training Center at Ryder Trauma Center portrayed on-site Army personnel who briefed the fire rescue responders.

Congratulations to Davie Fire Rescue for winning Second Place!

The annual competition presented by the University of Miami Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education (GCRME) was renamed in 1997 in memory of Stephanie Browne, RN, Bs, EMT-P, who served many years as educational coordinator at the GCRME.
